Radiance Discovery: The Secret Weapon for Glowing Legs that Doubles as a Mosquito Repellent
Two weeks ago, I attended a gorgeous outdoor wedding in the countryside of northern Italy. I loved everything about it: a beautiful setting, great company, and superb food and wine. However, my arms and shoulders did NOT have a good time. If they could make noise, they would have been screaming and yelling in discomfort from dozens of nasty violent mosquito bites. I did not expect to become a free buffet for the Italian mosquitoes, so I didn’t bring a mosquito repellent spray with me.
But interestingly, despite wearing a knee-length dress, my legs were free from the attacks! My extensive experience of bug bites has taught me that mosquitoes tend to start their feast from the legs, yet they were bite-proof that evening! How could that be? I was desperate to find out! After thinking through what I’ve done in preparation for the wedding, I realized it was just a simple bottle that made all the difference. Turns out, NARS Monoi Body Glow II was the hidden hero, the protector of the realm.
I have been using the beauty oil all summer purely because it gives my legs a healthy glow. My shins are often very dry, and it works brilliantly as a moisturizer. Plus, it has an amazing floral scent that makes me feel extra womanly.
What I didn’t realize all this time was that the monoi oil from Tahiti, the foundation of NARS Monoi Body Glow, is in fact often found in natural bug repellent sprays. So on the day of the wedding, when I applied a handful of the product over my entire legs, it simultaneously doubled as a shield against mosquitoes.
The oil is made by soaking tiare flower in refined coconut extract for at least two weeks, infusing it with nutrients and a gentle floral fragrance. As monoi oil is rich in a skin-soothing agent called methyl salicylate, it nourishes the skin and protects it from the damage caused by the environment.
After reading more about monoi oil, I discovered it to be a great daily massage oil for tired, sore muscles too. After a long day of running errands and walking in the city, I would warm the oil in my palms and massage my calves to loosen the tensed muscles before going to bed; the calming effect is quite remarkable.
You will find an actual tiare flower in every elegant bottle, capturing the essence of the unique process, which is also a tradition of French Polynesia. I love that the chic look makes it an attractive addition to my collection of beauty products, too.
Verdict: I first came across the Monoi Body Glow oil when I received a sample after purchasing eye shadow and tinted lip crayons from NARS. As the brand is mainly known for its makeup products, I did not expect much from the beauty oil. However, to my surprise, I loved that it hydrates my skin and makes my legs look healthy and glossy under the sunlight. Then a big bonus, of course, is its hidden natural ability to repel mosquitoes, leaving your skin free of ugly red marks and itchiness!
